Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramists

Call for submissions for the Winifred Shantz Award

2009 WinShantz Award Ceremony

$10,000 will be presented annually to an emerging potter or clay sculptor. Seen as an award for achievement and an investment in the future, this award is designed to allow the recipient time away from the studio, to travel for career development, link with mentors, visit other studios, study museum collections, investigate kiln sites, or liaise with industry, performing research that will further their studio production. It may also be used for international residencies or symposia. While recognizing that not all ceramists arise from an academic background, this award is intended to assist at a post-graduate level of accomplishment. It may not be used to pay tuition.

The applicants must have been working for a minimum of five years and a maximum of ten years in a productive studio capacity. The call for applications for this award will be announced annually in the spring, via press releases, and on the gallery's website.

The Jury will meet in the late summer and the winner will be announced at a gala event held in support of the gallery to be held in the fall, following the jury's deliberation.

The Jury will consist of three specialists selected annually.

Hard copy applications for the WINIFRED SHANTZ AWARD FOR CERAMISTS should be delivered to the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery by June 30, 2010 at 5pm and should include the following:

  • Two-page résumé that clearly states what the applicant has accomplished in the past five years. This might include bibliography.
  • 20 slides (may include 5 details or close-ups) clearly numbered and labeled with the maker's name.
  • A slide list indicating title, date, process, and dimensions of each work.
  • A single page outlining how the award will be used: a proposal of the research program and its intended relevance to the applicant's future work. The successful award project must be completed within one year of the award being recieved.
  • In addition, please email your resume, slide list and proposal to info@canadianclayandglass.ca by June 30, 2010.

**Please note: All submissions will be kept on file at the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery's Artist's Registry for archival purposes. They will not be returned. Additional support material should not be necessary. We regret that we are not equipped to handle email submissions. All applications must be hard copy.

**A brief report summarizing the manner in which the award was spent and the benefits received by the winner must be delivered to the Gallery within a two year period after the award is received.

**Documents indicating itinerary, as well as confirmation by receiving mentors or industrial partners, and disclosure of the terms of agreement between partners and the recipient, may be requested prior to disbursement.
