Sherman Foundation Gift

WATERLOO REGION, ON, April 11, 2006:Historical Paperweights, from the Lewis & Ruth Sherman Collection June 4-September 3, 2006

This unique collection consists of 93 paperweights, the vast majority of which were created in the mid-19th century. The 19th century was the hey day of the paperweight, when people regularly wrote long letters to each other. Fancy writing desks adorned society homes and paperweights were a standard and functional part of desk sets, as well as decorative objects given as tokens of esteem.

The antique paperweights in the collection incorporate flowers, insects and fruit, along with arrangements of millefiore canes encased in globes of clear crystal. There is a strong preference for centring the design. Among the paperweight artists/makers included in the Sherman collection are: Baccarat, Banford, Clichy, St. Louis, Whitefriar, Ysart, Heilman, Parsley, Perthshire and Trabucco, and examples of Sandwich Glass, Chinese and 20th century Canadian paperweights from the Thomas B. King collection will be included.
