Zsuzsa Monostory

Originally trained as a biologist with a PhD in genetics at the Lorand Eotvos University in Budapest, Hungary, Zsuzsa Monostory moved to Canada and "fell in love with clay"--an obsession that proved fatal to her scientific career but inspiring to a new artistic career. She studied pottery at various colleges and galleries, including Central Tech College, Koffler Gallery, and Ontario College of Art in Toronto and Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. Since 1997, Monostory has instructed various workshops in raku, hand-building and throwing. She is particularly interested in the relationships between individuals and between people and their natural and artificial environments; she sates that many of her pieces "reflect opposites: on the one hand are geometrical shapes constructed with accuracy and on the other hand are rough looking little figures much like gesture drawings." Monostory is currently located in Toronto, Ontario.
